“Someday take me, far away from here, Kingdom coming, hard to believe.” This is the opening line from track 12 of the new record “Chasing Someday” from Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors. If you are not familiar with Drew and the band, just wait, you will be soon. This is the fourth album for the Nashville-based band, headed by Memphis native Drew Holcomb and his wife Ellie. The overall quality of musicianship, song-writing, production, and sound is absolutely amazing. Even if Drew and Ellie were not my friends, I would still be able to say, objectively, that “Chasing Someday” will be one of the best CD’s that I get this year. It releases tomorrow (Tues, Feb 8) but I have been fortunate enough to have had it for a month already. Here is what you can expect when you buy it on iTunes or Amazon this week (because you will want to buy it this week).
Musically, somewhat edgier than past projects, “Chasing Someday” plays like a story of life and love. This theme rings loudly throughout each song, ranging from the love of God, to the love of others, and finally the love found within a husband and wife. From the rocking first song, “Fire and Dynamite” (remade from their first record), to the graceful ballad of the last song, “Weight of the World,” each track calls you closer to the things most important in life.
If there was ever an anthem for DH&N, it’s in the song, “Live Forever”. Though different melodically than other Neighbors' tunes, “Live Forever” illustrates this theme of life and love through advice for a child to be careful in life as they live it to the fullest. This record shows the versatility of the Holcomb’s creative song-writing. “Can’t Get Enough of You” features Drew’s rock roots while “Baby Tomorrow” highlights their more traditional acoustic-led sound. “Your Love”, written by Ellie Holcomb, resonates with anyone who has ever desperately cried out to know love and be loved.
Everyone has a dream for “someday.” We all say “someday, I will...” For one, it’s to love or be loved. For another, it is to change the world or just stay alive. This record inspires us to chase our someday: to pursue life and love, then to find it, and make it our own.
“Someday I will hold you as my own, Someday you will know that I’m the only one for you.”
